Yates: Want less scandal? Vote GOP

Posted 4/08/2009 04:53:00 PM

The chairman of the Republican Party of New Mexico says the indictment of Public Regulation Commissioner Jerome Block Jr., a Democrat, is another reminder of the importance of a strong two-party system.

“Jerome Block’s indictment serves as yet another example of how the Democrat grip on the state of New Mexico has eroded trust in public officials,” said GOP Chairman Harvey E. Yates Jr. “Citizens of this state deserve elected officials who are honest and promote transparency, not officials who abuse their position for personal gain.”

“Superficial changes to the political establishment in this state will not resolve the underlying issue,” he said. “What we need is a true two-party system which will bring checks and balances to our government.”

Republican officials have complained for years that Democrats have controlled state government for several decades, and said that unchecked power is the primary reason for corruption scandals that have recently plagued the state and Democratic Party.

It seems as if the PRC,a commission that is extremely powerful has been plagued with commissioners who do not know how to behave themselves. This position has a salary of $90,000 plus perks. I appreciate how the GOP Chair wants transparency and all. But one of theirs David King has cost risk management, taxpayer money close to if not over $1,000,000 for his shenagigans. The republicans were not worried about his impropriety and being found guilty of sexual harassment more than once. When David King was found guilty of sexual harassment. He was asked by the chair of the PRC at that time if he felt he could still do his job. And they would leave it up to him if he wanted to step down. What balonie! I have met Messers Block. I don't know if they are guilty or not a court will decide that. But I do hope our PRC commissioners will not protect them if they are found guilty.and allow the younger Block to just do business as usual.

Mr. Yates - you state if we want less scandal to vote GOP. Well your party is also in trouble and will need to regroup in 2010 and move towards the middle. The GOP took a hell of betting in 2008 and as long as you continue being a two issue (Gay rights and abortion) party you can expect to have another whooping! GOP voters are tired of the same "old" business as usual and you don't offer any real solutions to the problem of corruption by your counterparts. The "grey hairs" of the party and the "extreme fanatics" of your party will not help elect extremist. You are correct that this state deserves elected officials who are honest, without any personal motivations. Mr. Yates don't you believe that your Party's motivations to enforce their religious bleifs on the majority is a special interest agenda? We need true political reform on both sides of the aisle! Wake-up NM GOP - the politics of yesterday are gone - there must be a NEW HOPE AND NEW VISION FOR 2010 and beyond! Mr. Yates, with all due respect, before throwing stones make sure your window are "unbreakable."

Both parties are guilty of these kind of shenanigans nd both parties must take the blame for the lack of morals, thievery and filling their bellies at the public's wallets. It is time for a real reformer. I, for one, am sick and tired of New Mexican politcos lying through their teeth to engage in favoritism and theft. And whoever is willing to start at the top thief can have my vote.

The name calling from the Democrats and the Republicans will not get honest people into office. It will take voters who have no axe to grind to elect honest and forthright people to office.
The best avenue of approach is to study your candidate, whether he or she be Democrat or Republican before voting for them. Their are honest people who will represent our interests, just as there are dishonest people who will take advantage of their positions. The two party system in this country has worked for some two hundred years and will continue to work.
The problem is that their are too many factions fighting for what they want and not taking into consideration the needs of the country as a whole.
Remember that this country was founded as a Republic, but it has moved to a Democracy, which is the step before Socialism. Socialism is the next step to Oligarchy, which is the same government you have in many third world countries such as Mexico. Is this what the people want? I for one had rather have my freedom and not have the government taking all of my money and using it for nefarious purposes and giving the banks and credit card companies carte blanche to charce me high interest on loans and call them fees. I would like the right to make my own choices and live a life of freedom that alows me to compete in a wolrd that is of my own making.

Mr. Baca, since democrats have run the majority of the state of New Mexico government since statehood, your comment is either a joke or willfully blind. Mr Yates is in a position where his rhetoric is expected but for the rest of us, the bipartisan effort to increase transparency in state government this last session points to the answer not silly statements.

Mr. Baca i wouldn't be pointing any fingers on war and torture, since it was a Democrat who first started the Vietnam war, the Korean war and kept them both going for a lot longer than the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. As I said before every time someone gets in office that wants only to serve his own needs, then we the people get sc----- and they don't even use any balm to make it easier.
The need is for the people to realize that the Democratic Party is not for the working man and they want to seal everything they can get their hands on and leave us with a huge deficit. You need to study your political history a little more and see where the truth really is.
I worked under both rigimes and I know the truth of what happened since the 1960s. I believe it was Kennedy who first tried to get us into a war with Russia and then took us into a war in Indo China, that the French had already lost. I also believe that it was Truman who took us into Korea and sold the American people a bill of goods about what we could do and then fired the best General we had over there and I know it was Johnson who contiued the war in Vietnam for a long length of time and when he died and left it to Nixon and Ford to bring us out of it. Don't tell me that all of these gentlemen were not Democrats. Sure the Republicans have done some bad things, but instead of pointing the finger at someone, maybe you should get your facts straight first.

We need more Republican Candidates, why was there not one to run against Block this past election? The key is we need a homegrown Republican local from Northern New Mexico to run for this seat - I think we will see one that will emerge, that can actually win in the reliably Demo area.
