Herrera named president of Latino organization

Secretary of State Mary Herrera was named president of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) today.

Herrera had previously been serving as the organization’s vice president.

“I am deeply honored and humbled in the confidence my colleagues have in my leadership for this very important organization,” Herrera said in a news release. “During the difficult times our nation is facing, I am proud of the public service Latino elected officials are providing to lead our nation in the right direction. NALEO plays a critical role in supporting their leadership and I am proud to serve my colleagues in this capacity.”

The association is a nonpartisan leadership organization. There are more than 6,000 Latino elected and appointed officials across the nation.

Let me first congratulate Secretary Herrera on her appointed to serve on NALEO. I wish her well in her tenurs.

However, your statement that this organization is "non-partisan" is not the case. In fact they are comprised of almost 80% Democrats and their causes have leaned to more liberal/progressive issues.

They similar comparison with LULAC which started as a Hispanic scholarship and defense organization against discrimination has also now become a complete Democrat organization.

As a Hispanic, I am concerned that my fellow "Hermanos Y Hermanas" have left their conservative family values for far left thinking.

Again, I wish Secretary Herrera "Felicidades!"

Secretary Herrera has been doing a great job of cleaning up the SOS office and getting rid of some of Vigil-Giron's deadwood. As a candidate, I was often frustrated by my attempts to get help from the staff of the former administration. The web page is improving too, though more is needed. But I read that Herrera has her staff working on it.

Well, I appreciate Hererra's efforts to clean up the SOS office...I think she's an honest person (in contrast to her predecessor). However, I'm not sure she represents NM very well outside of the state, especially before a national organization. She is not a good speaker and frankly, her lack of education shows. There are so many other quality choices for Hispanics...why they chose her is beyond me.
