Udall challenges Pearce to three debates

Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Tom Udall challenged his opponent today to three debates before the November election.

Udall campaign manger Amanda Cooper sent a letter to Bob Carter, chief of staff for Republican Steve Pearce, challenging Pearce to three debates that would be televised statewide.

Asked if he had any response, Pearce’s spokesman, Brian Phillips, said, “Not yet.”

Udall’s challenge comes after a disagreement over format ended hopes of a joint appearance at this weekend’s New Mexico Farm and Livestock Bureau gathering on Saturday in Mescalero. Instead, Udall will speak for 30 minutes, then take questions, and Pearce will do the same when Udall is done. In addition, Udall refused a debate challenge from Pearce several weeks ago, saying there would be plenty of time for debates in the fall.

Now Udall wants three debates, Cooper wrote in the letter.

“To make the decision of who our next senator will be, New Mexicans deserve to see the candidates side-by-side, engaging in a vigorous exchange of ideas with each other,” Cooper wrote. “They deserve to see where each candidate stands on the issues that matter most to New Mexico and our nation.”

She proposed that the debates be held after Labor Day, be televised and coordinated to reach every part of the state and include a “variety of formats to allow the most statewide interaction with the people of New Mexico.”

Cooper wrote that she’ll be contacting Carter in the coming days to set up a meeting to work out the details and finalize a debate schedule.

“We hope the Pearce campaign will join us to ensure that all New Mexicans have the opportunity to participate and have their voices heard in this historic United States Senate campaign,” Cooper wrote.

That's an odd move. The Udall campaign is doing well in the polls and it's doing well financially. Why go for debates unless you want to change the dynamic of the campaign? It'll be interesting to see the next round of polls and fundraising to see if there's been movement. One wonders what has spooked them.

When there is a debate here is a question for Congressman Pearce: Do you, a family member or any of the companies you are involved with have any public land leases for oil and gas?

Bring on the debates. Let the candidates actually discuss the issues. This could be very beneficial. The voters should have the opportunity to hear the candidates articulate their positions, or perhaps hear the candidates attempt to play word games and dance around the issues. Either way, it will be a good opportunity to judge each candidate based on their own words and their own actions, instead of from the "news" delivered with a slanted media bias.

I personally think the more debates the better. Congressman Pearce has consistent positions that are clearly stated. On the other hand, Mr. Udall has yet to take a position on anything that doesn't please his liberal supporters. Mr. Udall's policy is duck your head until the money people tell him what to say! After all hes both for and against LANL - he's both for and against providing our troops what they need - maybe he'll actually be both for and against an energy policy that reduces the burden of the American Taxpayers so they don't have to decide against gasoline to go to work or food for their family. I know - let's make them totally dependent on Big Brother - after all that is the goal of the liberals! We certainly aren't smart enough to make our own decisions about anything!
