Mailer: McCamley is a 'jolt of energy' for middle class

Posted 5/09/2008 03:30:00 PM

Democratic 2nd Congressional District candidate Bill McCamley’s new mailer seeking to set himself apart from Washington politicians is currently hitting mailboxes across the district.

The mailer, which you can see by clicking here, labels McCamley “a jolt of energy for the middle class.” The back shows a crowd of headless black suits with labels including “rich guy,” “out-of-touch,” “boring,” “career politician,” “bought and paid for,” and “for sale” across their chests. In the middle of the crowd is McCamley, wearing a blue shirt and grey slacks and smiling.

“Meet Bill McCamley. Finally, something different for Congress,” the caption states.

In the mailer, McCamley pledges to take on special interests and work hard and says his goals are to create good jobs in New Mexico by focusing on wind and solar power, bring American troops home from Iraq, fix the American health care system, and bring down gas prices “by standing up to big oil companies.”

As I’ve disclosed in the past, I’m friends with McCamley. Click here to read about that.

How can McCamley claim to be an opponent of special interests with his record of "behind the scenes" and publicly-denied support for rich developers in Dona Ana County? He claims to be a "jolt of energy" for the middle class. I say to the middle class (of which I'm a member), watch your wallet, because McCamley is about to use his energy to pick your pocket, while he shakes your hand and smiles at the same time!

Edward Bulwer-Lytton noted, ""It is difficult to say who do you the most harm: enemies with the worst intentions or friends with the best."

Heath steers away from favoritism far better than most, in my experience, and dutifully tags each and every McCamley article with an italicized BFF disclaimer. If you are going to chastise, I suggest chastise him for his choice in friends, not for reporting on them as he does every other political candidate in NM. 5 of the 7 current site produced front page articles cover candidate advertising, making this as relevant as any other story.

If Heath was my friend, he would change the title of this article to Mailer:McCamley - Red Bull inspired junk mail promises to Give You Wings, "jolt of energy".

As I have not disclosed in the past, I went to college with Heath and Bill, and we often agree to disagree.

I get a kick out of "Insight", he/she says that with Bill McCamley you have to (look behind the scenes for his rich developer supporters) and (watch your wallets). My friend, have you ever looked at Bill McCamley's list of supporters. They are lots of middle class citizens giving Bill the most they can afford. The Verde Group is the only group that gave Bill a substantial amount of money and yes they are developers.

As County Commissioner, Bill voted against the Verde Group because they did not have enough affordable housing in their proposal. How's that for behind the scenes?

Bill McCamley has been a true supporter of all of us, especially the middle class. I, like a lot of people, was against the Spaceport proposal. But, you know what? I am convinced that the actual Spaceport will bring a lot of jobs to all classes of Southern New Mexicans, rich and poor.

Heath gets a lot of grief for bias, but a bit of digging finds a different bias evident in his writings - one that stems from principle rather than friendship.

On the main page, four of the ten articles deal with the GOP, and three of those watch the Wilson-Pearce contest. The articles focus on Pearce's negative campaigning and portray Wilson as a moderate, Pearce as an ideologue. Is Heath pro-Wilson?

The other six have two articles on McCamley (one generated by Heath's poll), one on the presidential election, one by Carter, one on some Albuquerque stuff that none of us Doña Ana people care about, and a weird one by Dr. Michael "stock up before the atom bombs fall" Swickard. Is Heath pro-Armaggedon?

Going into just the Democratic CD2 contest, Heath has articles on Bill's fundraising, Teague's endorsements, Teague's fundraising, and Teague's free food meet-and-greet at Young Park. Is Heath pro-free food?

If anything, Heath has consistently been against negative campaigning, against big money in politics, and in favor of moderates in politics. If someone runs a negative ad, especially after saying they won't, Heath hits them on it. If someone always votes with their party, Heath hits them on it. If someone's campaign relies on huge donations rather than small checks from the little guy, Heath hits them on it.

If Heath didn't know Bill from Adam, methinks we'd see the same "bias" in his reporting as we see now. And that says good things about his credibility and integrity as a political reporter.

Screw italics, I'll bold it: I'm Bill's friend, and Jeremiah's friend, and I can pick Heath out of a line-up.
