Chávez says Wilson won’t win another N.M. election

Albuquerque Mayor Martin Chávez says U.S. Rep. Heather Wilson, R-N.M., won’t win another election in New Mexico.

His comments come in response to the growing scandal over allegations that Wilson and Sen. Pete Domenici, R-N.M., pressured former U.S. Attorney David Iglesias to speed indictments in a public corruption scandal in time to sway voters in the November 2006 election.

Chávez was quoted today by Congressional Quarterly, which is read by members of Congress and politicos in the nation’s capital and beyond, on the impact the scandal will have on Wilson’s career.

“Heather Wilson will no longer be elected in New Mexico,” he said, adding that her actions were “reprehensible.”

I was also interviewed for and quoted in the article.

Chávez is a prominent Democrat who is currently raising money for a potential 2010 gubernatorial run against Lt. Gov. Diane Denish. He has also expressed his interest in the Senate seat, but has said he won’t run against Domenici.

He had been set up for a potential run against Wilson for Domenici’s seat after the senator retires, but many analysts agree with Chávez that Wilson, who was re-elected last year by 861 votes out of more than 211,000, is weakened to the point that she is no longer a valid candidate for Senate and may not be able to hold her House seat.

Chávez has ruled out running against Wilson for the House seat in 2008.

That's a bold statement considering Mayor Chavez can't win an election outside of Albuquerque and claims he won't run against Wilson or Domenici.
The mayors decisive victory over Eric Griego and Brad Winter don't point towards a statewide victory in the near future.
Mayor Chavez should learn to walk quietly and carry a big stick...

This is now a national scandal, with Congress investigating it. Is it possible that Heather Wilson's seat may become open before the 2008 election? Where or how far is the investigation going?

Dominici has already retained an attorney. Wilson should be hled to accountability.

You know in New Mexico people are slow to call a "duck a duck"?
If an elected official makes an improper "contact" with a judge what would you call it? The contact wasn't to arrange a coffee date or a happy birthday wish.....
A reasonable person already knows that those types of communications are off limits and violate ethics rules of conduct. If you can't keep your nose out of the justice department's business while in the capacity of an elected official then it's clearly "time to go."

Chavez tacked so far right in his run for mayor, endorsing Domenici and several Republican candidates for city council over Democrats. He cannot win the Democratic base. We need a REAL Democrat for the Senate and House seat. What about Rep. Gail Chasey, Sen. Linda Lopez, Councilman Martin Heinrich, or former Councilman Eric Griego?
